Asante Kotoko coach Mariano Barreto has explained the decision to substitute Latif Anabila at half time during their stalemate against Eleven Wonders this past weekend.
The Porcupines were held to a 1-1 drawn game at the Ohene Ameyaw Park after Fabio Gama shot the Reds in front before Samuel Boakye got the equaliser before half time.
Few minutes after Eleven Wonders’ equaliser, assistant coach Johnson Smith who was on the touchline, replacing Barreto whose work permit issues kept him out of the game replaced Anabila with Patrick Asmah on the 45th-minute.
“It’s easy – when we gave the instructions during the week, everybody knows what they have to do. Even before the match we made some alert about attitude and the midfield is the heart of any team and when the heart doesn’t work, we have to do surgery”
“If I was at the bench, I would have substituted him early because it is not acceptable for some players losing the ball the way they lose it and the worse thing is they fail to recover”
“Of course, everybody makes mistake, the biggest players in the world make mistakes and when they make the mistake, they should be the first to solve the problem they created. For me, this is unacceptable so if I was at the bench, probable I would have made the substitution on the 22nd-minute,” he ended.
Asante Kotoko will take on Bechem United at the Len Clay Stadium on Wednesday in an outstanding matchweek 16 premier league fixture and Anabila has been included in the 18-man squad but it is unclear whether he will be getting the chance in the starting XI once more.
