FEATURE! Internal Wrangling Puts Asante Kotoko’s Future On Life Support

The just ended season will go down as one of the worst season in the operations of Asante Kotoko. Almost every day has an infamous story to present in the club.

Every department of the club has its share of the unfortunate happenings in the club. Coaches have had to spill classified information in the public domain, while the relationship between management and board of directors is best described as sour, as night passes by. Insinuations and innuendos have characterized responses from top officials, any time discussions on the club’s future comes on board.

Head coach Mariano Barreto – on some occasions – did not hide frustrations he has had to endure after taking over the club. From on-field issues to off-field matters, the story shared by the Portuguese trainer was discouraging and denigrating. Subsequent issues made known by the former Black Stars head coach gave insight into the cracks that had permeated through Asante Kotoko.

Assistant coach Johnson Smith came through with his side of the story in the club, going ahead to indicate the number of players he will use, when given the opportunity to lead the team from the dugout. The issues are far from over.

Chief Executive Officer Nana Yaw Amponsah and club’s Board Chair Dr. Kwame Kyei have come up in discussions, as the two persons are reportedly not enjoying a harmonious working relationship. The frosty relationship appears to be hampering progress in the club, as the future of the club looks bleak and hangs on life support.

As it stands, management and board members are yet to engage, while reports for deliberations are on the waiting list. Until those reports are deliberated upon and reviewed for last season, measures to be put in place for next season will continue to wait. The internal wrangling is overshadowing relevant issues concerning the club such as, sponsorship deals that have been secured and those yet to be announced.

Supporters seem to be in a state of aggravated despair, as they are gradually being divided sharply. Whereas some accuse management of these distasteful happenings, others point fingers at the board members.
